Meet the
cheetah.
Cheetahs persist in fragmented populations, mainly in Africa, with a critically small Asiatic population in Iran. They need prey-rich open landscapes and room to avoid stronger competitors.

Appearance
Slender, long-legged and deep-chested, with solid black spots and dark tear marks running from each eye toward the mouth.

Behaviour
Often hunts by day using sight, acceleration and manoeuvrability. Females are generally solitary; males may form stable coalitions.

Diet
Primarily hunts small-to-medium ungulates, selecting prey it can overtake in short chases.

Habitat
Open grassland, savanna, dry woodland and semi-desert with suitable prey and visibility.

Distribution
Most remaining populations are in sub-Saharan Africa, with a tiny remnant population in Iran.
