Meet the
sunda clouded leopard.
Recognised as distinct from the mainland clouded leopard, this species is restricted to the Sunda region. Continuing forest conversion and fragmentation threaten its habitat.
Appearance
Darker than its mainland relative, with smaller cloud-shaped markings, many spots within the blotches and a long balancing tail.
Behaviour
Secretive and partly arboreal, though camera traps also record it travelling on forest floors and trails.
Diet
Likely takes a range of mammals and birds; direct observations in the wild remain limited.
Habitat
Lowland and montane tropical forest, with strongest dependence on continuous cover.
Distribution
Native to Borneo and Sumatra.
