Meet the
lion.
Lions are the most social living cats, commonly forming prides of related females, their young and a coalition of males. Most live in sub-Saharan Africa; the Asiatic lion survives in and around Gujarat's Gir landscape.

Appearance
Large, muscular cats with short tawny coats. Adult males often develop a mane, though its size and colour vary.

Behaviour
Pride structure, group hunting and communal cub care distinguish lions from most other felids. Activity is often concentrated in cooler hours.

Diet
Primarily hunts medium-to-large ungulates and may also scavenge opportunistically.

Habitat
Most often associated with savanna and open woodland, but also uses dry forest and scrub.

Distribution
Widespread but fragmented in sub-Saharan Africa, with one wild population in western India.
